STANFORD, CALIF. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team dropped its season opener to the Stanford Cardinal, 87-42, on Monday night, at Maples Pavilion.
Jeni Levine led both teams with 18 points, while freshman
Leyla Minor chipped in 11 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinal started the contest off strong for an early 8-0 advantage to never allow the Spartans to lead in the game. Levine cut the deficit to five, 8-3, with a three-pointer at 6:56. The Cardinal continued their momentum with eight-straight points before Minor chipped in her first collegiate three-pointer at 2:57, 16-6. Stanford notched the final field goal from behind-the-arc to close out the first frame on top, 24-12. Out of the 12 Spartan points in the first quarter, nine of those came from Levine.
Minor secured the first bucket of the second quarter at the charity stripe before Stanford notched nine consecutive points, 33-16. Levine launched a three-pointer at 5:03 before the Cardinal responded with their own triple on the other end, 33-16. Stanford snagged the final bucket of the first half to hold a 43-20 advantage heading to the locker room.
The Cardinal picked up where they left off, going 7-for-13 from the field in the third quarter. Stanford went 10-0 to start the second half before UNCG strung together a 3-0 run with free throws from Levine and a fast break layup from
Ciara Harris, 53-24. Levine knocked down the final bucket of the third quarter, but Stanford held the 67-29 lead going to the huddle.
