Coastal Carolina Outlasts Women’s Basketball, 67-61

CONWAY, S.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team came up just short in its matchup against the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina Wednesday night, 67-61, at the HTC Center in Conway, South Carolina.
 
Jeni Levine led UNCG with 18 points, while Leyla Minor added 10 points to round out the Spartans in double-figures.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Chanticleers posted a 5-1 run to begin the contest before a three-pointer from Jaila Lee at 6:31 began a 14-1 Spartan run. Coastal Carolina's Tessa Grady secured the final bucket of the first frame with a triple at 1:35. However, the Spartans held the six-point lead, 15-9, going to the break.
 
Coming out of the huddle, both teams traded baskets before the Blue & Gold notched six straight points for an eight-point advantage at 5:56, 21-13. Coastal Carolina bounced back with a 7-2 run to cut its deficit to three, 23-20. Levine secured a layup at 1:56 just before the Chanticleers chipped in four straight points to make it a one-point game at the half as UNCG held the slight edge, 25-24.
 
Both teams were mostly evenly matched in the third quarter with the Chanticleers holding the slight scoring advantage, 24-19. Coastal Carolina picked up a three-point play to start the second half to take its first lead since the beginning of the contest, 27-25. UNCG responded with two straight baskets on the other end to regain the 29-27 lead. Both teams continued to go back-and-forth. After a triple from Joelle Davis at 3:25, 39-37, Coastal Carolina collected a 7-0 run to take a five-point advantage at 1:41, 44-39. Both teams traded baskets to conclude the third stanza, but the Chants held the four-point lead at the break, 48-44.
 
The final frame saw Levine score 10 of her 18 points. Coastal Carolina got the scoring started with a layup at 9:29, 50-44. The Spartans retaliated with four consecutive points to make it a two-point game, 50-48. UNCG would make it a two-point game on four more occasions in the game, but the Chanticleers maintained control. After a three-pointer from Levine with 29 seconds remaining, 63-61, Coastal Carolina knocked down four straight free throws to come away with the 67-61 victory.

  • Tasia Johnson and Lee chipped in eight points apiece.
  • Lee and Rylan Moffitt collected six boards each.
  • Makiah Asidanya paced the Spartans with three dimes.
  • Minor added a new career-best three blocks.
  • UNCG paced Coastal Carolina in points off turnovers (15-6), points in the paint (30-22), fast break points (12-9), blocks (6-2) and assists (11-8).
  • Coastal Carolina won the rebound battle, 42-33.
  • The two teams were evenly matched in bench points (17-17) and steals (8-8).
