GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's tennis team fell 4-2 to the Liberty Flames on Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
"We bounced back and competed very hard against a solid team," said Head Coach
Mat Iandolo. "Unfortunately, we came up a little short. I am very proud of our team."
The Flames secured the doubles point for the 1-0 lead before going into singles play. Yu-Yun Chen and Celina Joseph secured the 6-3 victory over
Elisabeth Birkevold and
Lauren Thomson on court three.
Alexandra Dodashev and
Olivia Gallagher tied up doubles play in a 7-5 win over Daniella O'Neill and Maria Turchetto on court one. However, Anika Lemus and Yoanna Radulova were able to hold on for the 7-5 win over
Sydney Bly and
Raegan Mitchell on court two to give Liberty the 1-0 advantage.
Radulova continued her momentum into singles play by securing a 6-2, 6-3 win over Gallagher on court one to make it 2-0 Flames. Birkevold put the Spartans on the board in a dominating 6-3, 6-0 win over Joseph on court six to cut the deficit to one, 2-1. Bly tied the match at 2-2 with a tremendous 6-2, 6-2 victory over Lemus on court five. However, the Flames were able to secure the next two matches for the 4-2 win. Chen defeated Thomson on court three, 6-4, 6-4 to put the Flames back on top, 3-2, before Turchetto defeated Mitchell, 6-1, 7-6 on court four to clinch the match for Liberty, 4-2. Dodashev and O'Neill's singles match remained unfinished, 6-7, 2-5, on court two as Liberty was able to walk away with the 4-2 win.
