KERNERSVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) cross country teams swept the Spartan Classic team titles at the Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex on Friday evening, both the men and women finishing on top with 15 points in their respective races.
Lane Prochaska and Luke Hühn split hairs at the finish to lead the pack in the first 8K of the season for the Spartan men, while
Hailey Meyers took home the individual crown for the women. Both races saw the overall top 10 finishes dominated by the Blue & Gold.
MEN'S RACE
Prochaska took the win with a time of 26:08.3, pacing the Blue & Gold for the second time in as many meets this season. Hühn, racing for the first time this season, placed just .2 seconds behind at 26:08.5. The pair led an all-UNCG top five, followed by
Pierson Guerrant (third, 26:21.5),
Logan Ruffner (26:49.7), and
Jonathan Marsden (fifth, 27:45.6).
Spencer Slayton (28:05.3) and
Khalid Abdullahi (28:05.4) took sixth and seventh in another photo-finish.
Gunnar Douglass (28:21.7) and
Sebastian Frickel (28:31.1) placed ninth and 10
th, respectively, placing a total of eight Blue & Gold runners in the top 10 of a 46-participant field.
Jeremiah Jones (29:20.5) and
Landon Jones (29:44.1) were the next pair of Spartan finishers, crossing the line 14
th and 15
th respectively in their first races of the season. Sam Barnard made it three straight Spartans after crossing the line 16
th at 30:08.2, while
JT Brownlee concluded the UNCG pack in 33
rd (33:16.0).
The Spartans finished with an overall team total of 15 points, followed by local squads North Carolina A&T (68), Livingstone (72), Cleveland CC (102) and Guilford (131).
WOMEN'S RACE
Meyers, who has led UNCG in all three races so far this season, cruised to the win with a time of 18:41.1.
Vicky Sosa (19:11.2) and
Camryn Oates (19:34.1) took second and third, respectively, to round out the top three.
A run of Blue & Gold led by
Erica Rash (fifth, 19:59.6),
Keira Mansure (sixth, 20:04.3),
Olivia Arnold (seventh, 20:12.4) and
Joelle Tonne (eighth, 20:28.1) ensured a total of seven Spartans in the top 10 finishers out of a 39-runner field.
Sasha Helmer was the next finisher for UNCG, crossing the line 17
th at 22:24.0, just ahead of fellow freshman
Christiana Rodriguez (18
th, 22:43.0).
Emily Graff was the final finisher for the Spartans in 26
th, clocking in at 23:51.4.
UNCG finished with a team score of 15 points, leading local opponents North Carolina A&T (65), Newberry (73), and Salem (93).
