GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team took down the Western Carolina Catamounts, 55-46, in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action on Sunday afternoon inside Bodford Arena.
Jeni Levine led all scorers with 19 points, marking her 18
th game this season in double-figures.
Jaila Lee,
Ciara Harris and
Mia Simpson chipped in eight points each.
Tasia Johnson paced the contest with a new career-best 11 rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams exchanged six points apiece before Levine knocked down a triple at 1:41 to give UNCG a 9-6 advantage. Western Carolina's Taj Hunter went 1-for-2 at free throw line, but the Spartans went to the bench holding a 9-7 lead.
UNCG went on to outscore Western Carolina 18-6 in the second frame thanks to three-pointers from Lee and Harris. Levine concluded the scoring in the first half with a layup at 2:06 to send the Spartans into the locker room with a 10-point cushion, 25-15.
The Spartans and Catamounts came out of the break to record five points apiece. A layup from Simpson at 3:36 began a 13-2 Spartan run for a 43-22 advantage with 34 seconds on the clock, marking UNCG's biggest lead of the contest. Western Carolina's Betsey Burnett secured the final basket of the third quarter, but UNCG maintained a 43-24 lead going to the bench.
The Catamounts came out of the huddle to notch a 14-2 run, cutting their deficit to seven, 45-38, at 5:44. However, a jumper from Harris and triple from Levine widened back the Spartans' lead for UNCG to continue to maintain the advantage. Western Carolina notched the final two baskets of the game, but UNCG was able to walk away with the 55-46 victory.
