GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team opened the UNCG Invitational with two five-inning victories on Friday. The Spartans defeated Bucknell, 13-5, and then shutout Canisius, 9-0.
With their 7-5 overall record, the Spartans have won six-straight games. With today's performances, the Blue & Gold has reached double-digit hits for the sixth time this season.
The 9-0 victory is the third shutout this season.
Brooklyn Shroyer tossed the Spartans' first complete game no-hitter since Maddie Spell earned the 3-0 eight-inning win on Feb. 25, 2024, against Kennesaw State in Kennesaw, Georgia, at Bailey Park. This is also the third no-hitter for the Spartans in five years and fourth in nine years. Shroyer's performance was the 15
th no-hitter in program history.
This is Shroyer's second-collegiate no-hitter, as she had one on April 16, 2024, in a 3-0 victory against Le Moyne when she wore the Fairleigh Dickinson uniform.
GAME 1: UNCG 13 – Bucknell 5 (5 inn.)
- Bucknell took hold of a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Brooke Popella hit an RBI double, scoring Skye Perez.
- The Spartans responded immediately in the bottom of the frame with three runs on two hits and one error for a 3-1 advantage.
- Laney Deane's sacrifice fly drove in the first run for the Blue & Gold, before Hadley Gardner's single scored a second and an error added another tally, 3-0.
- The Bison cut the deficit to 3-2 in the top of the second with a bases-loaded RBI single, before the Spartans retired the side with back-to-back outs.
- A five-hit, five-run second inning for the Spartans broke the game open, 8-2. One of the five hits included a three-run home run from Macy Michael, her fourth of the season and 13th career blast.
- After a scoreless third inning, UNCG's Rylie Williams pinch hit and roped a two-run double down the left field line, adding two runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 10-2 advantage.
- A three-run homer over the left field wall in the top of the fifth by Bucknell's Popella kept the game alive, 10-5.
- Nya South led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run for her fourth-career blast, for an 11-5 lead.
- Deane followed with a single and Samantha Beck, who pinch ran, stole second base. Ava Talley followed with a ground out for the first out, moving Beck over to third, before Betsy Eatmon selected the fourth pitch of her at bat, sending it over the left field wall.
- This was her first homer of the season and 11th of her career, walking off with the eight-run victory, 13-5.

GAME 2: UNCG 9 – Canisius 0 (5 inn.)
- The Spartans scored at least one run in each of the four innings that the got to the plate.
- With two outs and a runner on second in the bottom of the first, Deane singled through the left side of the infield, bringing home Kaylyn Belfield for a 1-0 lead.
- In the bottom of the second, UNCG's Talley cranked her first-collegiate homer, for a 2-0 advantage.
- UNCG broke the game open with a four-hit, four-run third inning, giving the Spartans a 6-0 cushion. Deane and Talley recorded two-run doubles in the inning.
- On defense in the top of the fourth, the Spartans' Hadley Gardner caught a fly ball and sent a bullet over to Deane at first base for a double play, keeping the Golden Griffins from scoring.
- UNCG put up another crooked number in the bottom of the fourth, as Michael hit an RBI double to score Belfield and then South reached on an RBI single, before Deane scored on a wild pitch for a score of 9-0.
- Following a walk, Shroyer fanned three-straight batters by way of strike outs, securing the 9-0 victory.
