Men’s Tennis Set to Host North Carolina Central and Elon

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's tennis team will begin the 2026 home season with two in-state matchups, first hosting North Carolina Central (NCCU) on Saturday and then welcoming Elon on Sunday, with both matches starting at 1:00 p.m. at Piedmont Tennis Center.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS  

  • The Blue & Gold come into Saturday and Sunday's contest, 0-1 after dropping its opening spring match against No. 9 N.C. State (4-1).  

  • Senior John Gabelic is two wins shy of his 100th collegiate win.  

  • The Spartans competed in four tournaments in the 2025 fall season.     

  • UNCG began the fall campaign by traveling to the Elon Invitational from Sept. 12-14.     

  • The doubles duo of Sammy Presser and Alan Trbonja led the squad with two doubles victories over the first two days, making it to the final round of the Invitational.      

  • UNCG then hosted the Spartan Fall Invitational from Sept. 19-20 at the UNCG Tennis Courts in Greensboro, North Carolina.      

  • As a team, the Spartans won 20 singles matches over the three-day event.      

  • UNCG took part in the Davidson Fall Invitational at Davidson Tennis Courts from Sept. 26-27. In the two-day event, Gabelic won all three matches to win his draw.     

  • At the ITA Carolina Regionals, from Oct. 16 - Oct. 19, the tandem of Gabelic and William Elmers made it to the Round of 16 on Saturday before losing to South Carolina.    

  • At The Southern Conference (SoCon) Masters Qualifier, Devon Moskowitz won his singles draw qualifying for the main tournament held in the spring.    

  • In the Wake Forest Invitational, senior Andrew Black won his singles draw, while the Spartans captured 15 victories across the three-day event in all competitions.       

SCOUTING THE EAGLES  

  • NCCU enters this match 0-2 after losing 0-4 to No. 17 Duke and 1-6 to No. 9 N.C. State.  

  • Junior Antoni Pankowski was the only player that won his match against the Wolfpack on Feb. 2.  

  • The Eagles won the HBCU Tennis Championship on Sept. 21, where sophomore Naresh Bharathy won his flight to help propel NCCU to the win.  

  • The Eagles return seven starters from last year while adding two freshmen. 

  • The last match being played on Feb. 1, 2025, where UNCG narrowly defeated the Eagles 4-3 in Greensboro.  

SCOUTING THE PHOENIX 

  • Elon enters the match on Sunday 1-2 overall with its most recent match being against No. 11 Texas A&M on Jan. 21 losing 6-1.  

  • Sophomore Rafael Ymer scored the only point for the Phoenix against the Aggies.  

  • Elon won its opening spring match against Saint Joesph's on Jan. 10, 6-1 at Elon.  

  • The Spartans have matched up twice against The Phoenix in the fall, first at the Elon Invitational and then at the Wake Forest Invitational where UNCG holds the 5-2 advantage in all matches played.  

  • The last time UNCG and Elon met during the spring season was on April 10, 2024, where Elon took the win 5-2 in Greensboro.  

  • Elon has won the last eight spring matches played, and UNCG has not defeated Elon since 2015.

The Spartans will go back on the road next week, traveling to Chapel Hill to take on North Carolina on Tuesday, Feb. 10 at 7:00 p.m. at Chewning Tennis Center.
