South Clubs Two Homers in 8-1 Victory Over Southern Mississippi

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team defeated Southern Mississippi, 8-1, in a non-conference midweek battle on Wednesday at UNCG Softball Stadium.
 
Nya South hit a grand slam and a solo home run for her first game with multiple homers. This was also her first grand slam of her collegiate career. This is the first grand slam of the season for the Spartans and first since Macy Michael hit one against Western Carolina on May 3, 2025, in a 7-3 victory.
 
The Spartans extend their streak to four wins and are now 19-12 overall.
  • The Golden Eagles tallied the first hit of the day in the top of the first, but Brooklyn Shroyer kept them from doing damage striking out two of the batters.
  • In the bottom of the inning with the bases loaded and no outs, Laney Deane hit into a double play that pushed across Kaylyn Belfield for a 1-0 advantage.
  • Following a quick one-two-three defensive inning for the Spartans in the top of the second, UNCG broke open the game with five runs on two hits in the latter half of the frame.
  • With one out and the bases loaded, Belfield drew a walk to bring in a run for a 2-0 lead.
  • Southern Mississippi recorded the second out before South cranked a ball over the center field wall for a grand slam. This was her seventh homer of the season, giving UNCG a 6-0 cushion.
  • The third and fourth innings were scoreless for both teams, but the Golden Eagles cut the deficit to five with a run in the top of the fifth, 6-1.
  • UNCG responded with a run in the bottom of the frame, as South sent out another long ball for her second homer of the game, a solo shot to right center that hit the scoreboard, 7-1.
  • The Spartans put one more tally on the board in the bottom of the sixth, as Michael hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Rylie Williams from third, 8-1.
  • Southern Mississippi had Kayce Bennett lead off the seventh with a walk, but Nadia Andarowski retired the side with back-to-back strikeouts and a fly out to give the Spartans the 8-1 victory.

UP NEXT
UNCG will begin the 2026 Southern Conference (SoCon) slate at ETSU on Saturday and Sunday. The Spartans will face the Bucs in a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m. before closing out the series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Betty Basler Field.
