ROCK HILL, S.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team fell to non-conference foe Winthrop, 4-2, on Tuesday evening at Terry Field.
The Spartans are now 25-13 overall, while the Eagles improve to 22-16.
- Winthrop recorded the first hit of the game in the bottom of the first, as UNCG's first base knock came in the top of the second, but neither team could put a mark on the scoreboard.
- In the bottom of the third, the Eagles pushed across two runs on one hit and one error. One run came by way of a bases-loaded walk and the second was on a sacrifice fly.
- Following a scoreless fourth inning, UNCG saw Salem Ward lead off the top of the fifth with a double. She then advanced to third on a wild pitch and with one out, Jazmin Mejia grounded out to second to cut the deficit to 2-1 with an RBI.
- In the bottom half of the inning, Winthrop responded with a two-out two-run single, giving the Eagles a 4-1 lead.
- Macy Michael hit a ball to right center for a one-out double before Laney Deane moved her to third on a ground out in the top of the sixth.
- Avery Bouquin's right field single drove in Michael, cutting the deficit to 4-2.
- Winthrop stranded one runner on base in the bottom of the sixth and then kept the Spartans from doing any damage as they left two on base in the top of the seventh to hold on for a 4-2 win.
- Kaylyn Belfield (2-for-4) and Bouquin (3-for-3) were the only two Spartans with multi-hit games.
- Ward struck out five batters in her 4.2 innings of work, while Nadia Andarowski retired two in her 1.1 innings thrown.
