Women’s Tennis Sets Sights on SoCon Tournament

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's tennis team will turn its attention to the 2026 Southern Conference (SoCon) Tournament held from April 16-18 at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
 
The Spartans will enter the SoCon Tournament as the No. 6 seed, facing No. 3 Chattanooga on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in a quarterfinal matchup.
 
This will be the second-ever meeting with Chattanooga in the SoCon Tournament for UNCG. The Spartans and Mocs last met in the 2016 SoCon Tournament with Chattanooga securing the 4-0 win. Chattanooga won the regular season meeting with UNCG, 5-2, in Greensboro on March 15.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
  • UNCG heads into the postseason 4-17 overall and 2-5 in the SoCon.
  • The Spartans went 1-1 over the weekend, falling at Samford, 5-2 on Saturday, but notching a 5-2 victory over Mercer on Sunday in the regular season finale.
  • Sophia Cedeno and Sara Kostic led the Spartans with two singles wins apiece on the weekend.
  • The win over the Bears marks the second SoCon win for the Spartans this season as the team also defeated Western Carolina this season.
  • The last time UNCG collected two SoCon wins in a season was in 2021.
  • In addition, the last time UNCG defeated Mercer was in the 2022 season with a 4-3 victory.
  • After being down, 2-0, UNCG collected five singles matches to secure the 5-2 win over Mercer.
  • Kayley Bushnell is pacing the Spartans with a 9-8 overall singles record this season.
  • Ivet Sala-Sánchez and Kostic are following closely behind with six singles wins apiece this season.
  • Bushnell and Sala-Sánchez are the leading doubles team with three wins this season.
  • UNCG secured its first win of the season, shutting out Converse, 7-0, on March 1, at UNCG Tennis Courts.
  • The Spartans secured their second victory this year, defeating Presbyterian, 4-3, at UNCG Tennis Courts on March 22.
  • UNCG competed in four tournaments in the 2025 fall slate.
  • The Spartans concluded the 2025 regular season 3-18 overall and 0-7 in the SoCon.
  • Lauren Thomson finished on top for the Spartans in singles for the second consecutive year after tallying eight wins on the 2025 campaign. 
  • Sydney Bly led the team last season with nine total doubles wins.
  • Head Coach Mat Iandolo is in his second season at the helm of the UNCG women's tennis program.
SCOUTING THE MOCS
  • Chattanooga concluded the regular season 16-4 overall and 5-2 in the SoCon.
  • The Mocs most recently notched a 4-3 win at Samford on Saturday, to secure the No. 3 seed going into the SoCon Tournament.
  • Rufaro Mafarira is pacing the Mocs with a 27-6 overall singles record.
  • Addison Iacono is following closely behind with 23 wins this year.
  • Emma Pedretti and Savannah Presson are the best doubles team on the squad with a 15-4 record.
  • The Mocs have won five of their last seven matches with those two losses being in SoCon play against ETSU and Furman.
  • Chattanooga concluded the 2025 slate 11-11 overall and 2-5 in the SoCon.
  • Head Coach Chad Camper is in his 10th season at the helm of the Chattanooga women's tennis program.
