CHATTANOOGA, TENN. – The top-seeded UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team shut out the second-seeded Samford Bulldogs, 5-0, on Saturday morning at Frost Stadium in The Southern Conference (SoCon) Semifinals.
This will be the 10
th time in program history that the Spartans will be playing in a SoCon Championship.
The Spartans earned their 16th shutout of the season, which is the most since 2000 when UNCG had 19.
The battery of
Brooklyn Shroyer and
Madelyn McKinnon tossed their second one-hitter of the season. Shroyer recorded her 13
th complete game of the season and 46
th of her career, as she earned her 20
th win of the season and 48
th of her career. Her 20 wins sit tied for 10
th in UNCG single season pitching records and her 178 strikeouts sit fifth in UNCG single season records. This is her 10
th shutout of the season, which is now third in UNCG single season records.
UNCG has now surpassed the 40-win mark, and it is the second time in Head Coach
Janelle Breneman's 14 seasons at UNCG and only fourth time in program history.
The Spartans are now 41-17 overall and the Bulldogs are 27-30.
- Shroyer retired the first three Bulldogs in the first inning, which included one of her seven strikeouts of the game.
- In the bottom of the frame with two outs, Nya South crushed a solo home run to center field, putting UNCG up 1-0 with her 17th blast of the season.
- Following a quick second inning, the Spartans had the bases loaded and Samford's Makinley Turner walked Avery Bouquin to give UNCG a 2-0 advantage.
- With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Macy Michael turned on the fifth pitch of her at bat and sent the ball over the left field wall, tallying her 14th homer of the season, putting UNCG up 3-0.
- Samford had runners on first and second with one out in the top of the fifth, but Shroyer shut down the Bulldogs' offense once again with back-to-back pop ups.
- Laney Deane reached base in the bottom of the fifth, as she was hit by a pitch and Bouquin followed with a walk. After a meeting in the circle, Hadley Gardner found the gap in right center for a two-run double, extending UNCG's lead to 5-0.
- In the remaining inning and a half of play, UNCG was the only one to tally a hit, as the Spartans claimed a 5-0 victory to move on to the SoCon Championship.
- Michael was the only one with a multi-hit game, swinging 3-for-4 with two runs scored, one RBI and a home run.
