SoCon Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week. April 5, 2023

Outdoor Track 2023 (Graduate Student)
Earned a second-place finish at the Dennis Craddock Coaches Classic with a career best 4:05.91 mile…notched third place in the 800m at the Aggie Classic with another personal best time of 1:53.51.
 
Indoor Track 2022-23 (Graduate Student)
Finished first at the JDL DMR Invitational after recording a personal best time of 8:34.58 in the 3000m.
 
Cross-Country 2023 (Graduate Student)
Notched a third-place finish at the SoCon Cross Country Championship after recording a personal best time of 24:14.4 in the 8K…added another career best time in the 10K at the NCAA Division I Southeast Region Cross Country Championships with a 31:24.5 time.

Outdoor Track 2022 (Senior)
Joseph found more success as he adjusted to the event change from the previous season. At the Dennis Craddock Coaches Classic he placed 1st with a time of 14:22.49 and 2nd in the 1500m at the Aggie Classic. Thoma’s time of 3:48.96 ranked 3rd on All-Time UNCG Performances.

Indoor Track 2021-22 (Senior)
Joseph Thoma spent the season focusing on different events than he was used to. Rather than racing the 800m like previous years, he wanted the challenge of longer distance events. He finished 3rd overall in the mile at the Mondo College Invitational with a personal best time of 4:23.97. Joseph continued to run different races competing in the 3000m, then the 5000m. He finished 11th in his first 3000m at the SoCon Indoor Championship, crossing the line at 8:39.53.

Cross-Country 2021 (Senior)
Competed in all six meets this season… Ran a career best in the 6k Elon Opener clocking ina  time of 18:51.1 placing 20th… Ran a career best in the 8k ECU Pirate Invitational with a time of 24:59.8 placing 4th…Competed and ran a career best in the 10k NCAA Division I Southeast Region Cross Country Championships.

Outdoor Track 2021 (Junior)
Posted the two fastest times in the 800 meters this season for The G, finishing fourth at the High Point Vertklasse Meeting in 1 minute 55.11 seconds ... Placed sixth in the 800 at the Charlotte 49er Classic in 1:55.21.

Indoor Track 2019-20 (Sophomore)
Had a 53.68 400m time at the Dick Taylor Carolina Challenge (1.11), before running a 53.17 at the Mondo College Invitational to take third in the field (2.2) ... helped the Spartan 4x800m relay to a runner-up finish at the JDL January College Kick-off (1.19), finishing in 8:03.10 ... crossed the finish line in 1:57.18 while running the Darius Dixon Memorial Invite 800m (2.14) ... competed in the SoCon Indoor Championship 4x400m and DMR (2.29-3.1), with the Spartans coming in seventh (3:26.41) and fifth (10:27.52) in those events respectively.

Cross-Country 2019 (Sophomore)
Came in 38th while running the Adidas XC Challenge 6K in 19:26.8 ... completed the Louisville Classic 8K in a pace of 25:21.2.

Outdoor 2019 (Freshman)
Finished the HPU VertKlasse Meeting 1500m in 4:08.85 (3.22) and the 800m in 1:57.09 (3.23) ... 1:57.21 in the 800m was eighth at the Fred Hardy Invitational (3.29), while his showing in the 4x800m (8:07.35) grabbed second ... came in sixth while running the Aggie Invitational 1500m in a personal record time of 4:05.55 (4.13) ... set what was then an 800m PR at the Aggie Invitational with his 1:56.64, before beating that time with a 1:56.05 at the Duke Invitational (4.19) ... helped the Spartans' 4x800m to a seventh place finish with a time of 3:31.22.

Indoor Track 2018-19 (Freshman)
Made collegiate debut in the 4x400m at the JDL College Kick-off Classic (12.1) ... ran the Wake Forest Invitational mile in 4:41.61 (1.12) ... finished the 800m in 1:58.95 while competing at the Darius Dixon Memorial Invite (2.8) ... helped the Spartans score points in both the SoCon Indoor Championship DMR and 4x400m (2.24-2.25) ... finished the 4x400m in 3:30.27 to come in seventh ... completed the DMR in 10:37.96 to finish sixth.

High School
Lettered all four years in cross country and track at Whippany Park High School in Whippany, New Jersey … Assisted the Wildcats to section and NJAC Conference Championships for three years … Named first team in the conference all four years in cross country and track … Set school records in the 600 meters indoor (1:24.22), 800 meters indoor (1:59.75) and 1,000 meters indoor (2:37.20) … Ran a personal-best of 1:56.31 in the 800-meters at the NJSIAA Group 2 Championships … Had the top mark in the 1,600 meters outdoors (4:21.57) at the same meet and 4:26.60 indoors to win the NJSIAA Sectional Championships - North II Group 1 … Ran together with his brother Nicholas for the 4x400, 4x800 and distance medley relays … Placed third in the 4x800 at the NJSIAA Group 2 Championships and third at the NJSIAA Group 1 Championships ... Won in the distance medley relay at the Morris County Relays outdoors and were the runner-ups in the indoor NJSIAA Group 1 Championships … Set a personal record of 16:11.4 in the 5,000 meters at the Morris County Championships and then placed second at sectionals the following week … Finished second at sectionals the previous year … Was a member of several clubs: meditation club, audio/visual technology club, interact club (assisting students and the community), theater & musical club, and the madrigals group as a baritone … Chosen as a delegate for the 2017 New Jersey American Legion Boys State Program.
