Box Score

UNCG head men's soccer coach Michael Parker earned his 400th career victory in a 4-1 win over Southern Conference rival Appalachian State on Saturday night at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. Senior Chris Goos scored two goals and was credited with an assist in the victory.

With the win, the Spartans improve to 8-5-0 on the season and 2-2-0 in the SoCon. Appalachian State slips to 9-3-1 overall and 2-2-0 in league play.

Parker becomes just the third active coach to reach the 400 win milestone. He joins Jerry Yeagley of Indiana and Fred Schmalz of Evansville. In fact, Parker is just the sixth coach all-time to notch 400 career victories.

"The 400 wins are nice," Parker commented. "But, if you're in the game long enough, you chalk up wins and I've been in a long time."

Goos (Sr./Houston, TX) got the Spartans on the board early with a goal at the 3:24 mark. Kenny Bundy (Sr./Bixby, OK) and Doug Prewett (Jr./Austin, TX) were credited with the double assist. Goos struck again for the 2-0 lead at the 23:55 mark off a pass from Bundy. The two goals give Goos a league leading 14 goals on the season.

In the second half of play, Egill Atlason (Fr./Hafnarfjordur, Iceland) gave the Spartans a 3-0 cushion at the 61:39 mark off an assist from Goos. Cliff Patterson (Sr./Jacksonville, NC) used a chest-ball to put the Spartans up 4-0. Bundy and Brad McCurry (So/Gastonia, NC) were credited with the assists.

Appalachian State's Alex Carter beat UNCG's Joe Crump at the 75:30 mark to set the final score. Southern Conference Player of the Week Steve Mellor picked up the assist.

"This was a must win situation for us tonight," Parker said. "A loss for us would have been quite devastating. The guys came out determined and when we play like that we are a very good team."

The Spartans return to action again on Tuesday, October 22, at Davidson. Kickoff is slated for 7 pm. Appalachian State on Wednesday, October 23, at Clemson.
