Women's Soccer Whips Wofford, 3-0

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG senior midfielder Jill Barrett scored just 22 seconds into the match and the Spartans never looked back in a convincing 3-0 victory over Wofford in Southern Conference women's soccer action from UNCG Soccer Stadium on Wednesday night.

With the win, UNCG improves to 6-9-1 (3-4-1 SoCon), while the Terriers fall to 5-9-2 (4-4-1 SoCon).

Barrett (Sr./Elon College, NC) found some space on the right wing and caught Terrier goalkeeper Katie Menegaz off her line with a beautiful shot into the far upper corner. It was Barrett's first goal of the season as Shannon Alger (Fr./Denville, NJ) registered the assist. The goal was the quickest goal in UNCG women's soccer history. It bested the previous mark of 25 seconds, set by Penny Rich against North Carolina State on Sept. 20, 1995.

The Spartans pounded the Wofford goal for most of the night. UNCG got off 22 shots, but Menegaz kept the Terriers in the match. The senior netminder registered 11 saves on the night.

The Spartans finally put the match away in the final 10-minutes. Alger picked up her first career goal at 81:44. Cara Hammond (Fr./ Howell, NJ) and Alger worked a beautiful give-and-go. Alger broke free behind the Wofford defense and slotted it into the right corner, past a sprawling Menegaz.

Amy Carnell (Fr./Lake Stevens, WA) really erased any hopes for the Terriers with her goal at 86:16. Rakel Logadottir (So./ Hafnarfjordur, Iceland) whipped in a beautiful ball over the Wofford defense. Carnell ran onto the ball and slipped it under a charging Menegaz for the third and final goal of the match. It was Carnell's seventh goal of the season. Logadottir now has 11 assists on the season, third-best in UNCG single-season history.

Jennifer Stillman (Fr./Randolph, NJ) recorded her third shutout of the season. The goalkeeper was forced to make only two saves, both in the first half. It was the sixth shutout of the season for UNCG. In fact, all six wins for the Spartans have come via shutout.

UNCG returns to action this Sunday afternoon with another critical SoCon match. Furman, which stands atop the league and undefeated in conference play, makes it way to UNCG Soccer Stadium. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m.
