Spartans Win 10th Game Of The Season With 9-0 Victory Over Wofford

The UNC Greensboro men's soccer team registered a season-high in goals with a 9-0 shutout victory over Wofford on a cold and rain soaked Wednesday evening at UNCG Soccer Stadium. UNCG improves to 10-7-0 on the season and 3-3-0 in the Southern Conference. Wofford slips to 3-12-1 and 1-5-1 in league play.

Egill Atlason (Fr./Hafnarfjordur, Iceland) scored the Spartans' first two goals of the evening off assists from Cliff Patterson (Sr./Jacksonville, NC) and Kenny Bundy (Sr./Bixby, OK), respectively. Patterson then scored his 12th goal of the season at the 32:51 mark to give the Spartans a 3-0 advantage at the intermission.

Svafnir Gislason (Sr./Reykjavik, Iceland) scored the first goal of the second half at the 56:07 mark. Chris Goos (Sr./Houston, TX) was credited with the assist. The Spartans picked up the fifth goal of the game on an own goal in the 65th minute of play.

At the 76:58 mark of the second stanza, Goos scored his SoCon leading 16th goal of the season. Over the next five minutes of the game, Gislason added his second goal, Michael Fitzgerald (Fr./Wilmington, NC) scored his first career goal and Adrian Worthen scored his third of the season to end the scoring.

UNCG's Jay Benfield (Fr./Lewisville, NC) got the start in goal and played all 90 minutes en route to his first career shutout. Wofford's Zach Voght recorded 12 saves in goal.

With the win, UNCG has now won 10 or more games for 23 consecutive seasons. Head coach Michael Parker has reached double-figure victories in all 19 seasons at the helm at UNCG.

UNCG returns to action again on Saturday, November 2, against Elon. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 pm. Wofford will also play on Saturday, November 2, at UNC Asheville at 2 pm.
