Spartans Cruise To 3-0 Victory Over VMI

The UNC Greensboro men's soccer team posted a 3-0 shutout victory over VMI Saturday night at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. With the win, the Spartans finish the 2002 regular season 13-7-0 and 5-3-0 in Southern Conference action. VMI finishes 2-10-4 and 2-6-0 in league play.

On senior night, freshman Egill Atlason (Fr./Hafnarfjordur, Iceland) grabbed the spotlight early with his ninth goal of the season at the 6:35 mark. Svafnir Gislason (Sr./Reykjavik, Iceland) and Kenny Bundy (Sr./Bixby, OK) were credited with the assist.

UNCG's Chris Goos (Sr./Houston, TX), the nation's leading scorer with 60 points, scored his 20th goal of the season in the 14th minute. Goos buried the shot from 25 yards out. With the goal, Goos becomes UNCG's first player to total 20 goals and 20 assists in the same season.

In the game's 27th minute, UNCG goalkeeper Charlie DeMello (Sr./Shreveport, LA) was issued a red card when he charged out for a save and illegally used his hands outside the box. With the red card, Jay Benfield (Fr./Lewisville, NC) replaced DeMello, and the Spartans were forced to play a man down the remainder of the match.

Cliff Patterson (Sr./Jacksonville, NC) broke a 64 minute scoring drought when he connected on his 17th goal of the season. Benfield picked up his first career assist on the play.

VMI was whistled for 26 fouls in the match, while the Spartans tallied just five.

With the regular season over, both squads will await seedings for the 2002 Southern Conference Tournament in Charleston, SC. The tournament begins Thursday, November 14, with the championship match on Sunday, November 17.
