ROCK HILL, S.C. – The UNCG volleyball opened the 2002 season Friday afternoon at the Microtel Inn & Suites Winthrop Invitational with a pair of three-game losses to Winthrop and Jacksonville State.
Winthrop's Logan Pierce, a transfer from Oklahoma University, led all players with 14 kills (.367 hitting percentage) and Mary Hock, a freshman from Garland, TX added 11 kills (.421 hitting percentage) with three service aces.
The Eagles (1-0) used a .327 team hitting percentage to defeat the Spartans 30-18, 30-14, 30-20. Jennifer Pritchard had 13 kills (.474 hitting percentage) and four block assists. Christie Davis led the team with four service aces and added 38 assists. Davis also had five digs which put her over the 400 mark for her career.
UNCG (0-1) was led by Dawn Bright's 10 kills, four block assists and solo block. Kim Dayton had a match-high nine digs. The Spartans were hurt by a match hitting percentage of -.056. Juliet Pack had 11 assists and three digs.
In the Spartans second match of the day, Jacksonville State improved to 2-0 with a 30-20, 30-21, 32-30 victory over UNC Greensboro, Friday evening.
Jennifer Brenneman's match-high 14 kills helped lead the Gamecocks (2-0) to their second victory of the tournament and she also added 10 digs. Christina Cary had 11 kills and Meredith Duke dished out 35 assists. Kisha West had a match-high with 15 digs.
Dawn Bright's 10 kills and three solo blocks led UNCG (0-2). Kim Dayton collected 11 digs and five block assists.
Jacksonville State remains undefeated in the tournament and will square off against Virginia Commonwealth at 9 a.m. and Winthrop at 2 p.m. on Saturday. UNCG is 0-2 in the tourney and will face Gardner-Webb at 11:30 a.m. and Virginia Commonwealth at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
