UNCG Men's Soccer Rolls Past Mercer, 3-0, In Season Opener

Greensboro, NC - UNC Greensboro senior Chris Goos scored two goals to lead the Spartans to a 3-0 victory over Mercer in the 2002 season opener on a rain-soaked Saturday night at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.

With action slowed due to the downpour, Goos (Sr., Houston, TX) put the Spartans on top with a goal from 30 yards out at the 10:14 mark. The goal would prove to be enough for the game and would also set the halftime score at 1-0.

Goos scored his second goal of the game at the 66:01 point of the second half to put the Spartans up 2-0 courtesy of an assist from Egill Atlason (Fr., Hafnarfijordur, Iceland). With the lead in hand, Svafnir Gislason (Sr., Revkjavik, Iceland) put the game away with an unassisted goal at the 81:14 mark.

UNCG goalkeeper Joe Crump (Jr., Greensboro, NC) posted the shutout in the season opener with three saves in his 90 minutes. Mercer's Andrew Castrichini posted seven saves in goal.

The Spartans' outshot the Bears 15-3 in the contest.

UNCG improves to 20-11-1 all-time in season openers and 15-4-1 under head coach Michael Parker.

The Spartans will return to action again Sunday, September 8 at Clemson. Kickoff is set for 2 pm.
