Men's Soccer Routs Campbell, 8-1

Box Score

Box Score

Chris Goos scored his seventh goal of the season and UNC Greensboro scored six unanswered goals in the second half to claim an 8-1 victory over Campbell in men's soccer action on Wednesday night at the Eakes Athletic Complex.

UNCG's seven-goal margin of victory stands as the largest ever in the 15-game series between the schools, topping a 5-0 Campbell win in 1992.  The eight goals allowed stands as the most the Camels have surrendered since an 8-1 loss to UNC Wilmington in 1978.

On a rainy evening, the Spartans (4-1) took a 2-0 lead at the break on goals from Goos and Cliff Patterson.  Campbell equalized through Shea Geyer in the 54th minute, but Jeff Lochrie pushed the margin to 3-1 just over five minutes later.

After James Carlson ended a scramble in the box following a UNCG corner kick with his first goal of the year in the 66th minute, UNCG scored four times during a 9:22 span late in the contest.

Kenny Bundy scored in the 74th minute, followed by goals from Adrian Worthen (75th minute) and two goals by Paul Zazenski in a 1:29 span, the last coming with 7:00 remaining in the contest.

UNCG held a 22-12 edge in shots, scoring six times on 10 second-half chances.  Spartan keeper Jay Benfield made six saves, while Campbell's Billy Englishby had eight stops.

Campbell (1-2) hosts Mercer on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. in its Atlantic Sun Conference opener.  UNC Greensboro travels to Furman for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff on Saturday for its first Southern Conference game of the year.
