Box Score

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest, ranked third in the nation, blanked UNC Greensboro, 3-0, in men's soccer action on Wednesday night at W. Dennie Spry Stadium. Wake Forest improves to 5-0-2 with the victory, while the Spartans slip to 4-3 on the young season.

In the opening minutes of the first half, UNCG took the role of aggressor. The Spartans' Chris Goos and Kenny Bundy each narrowly missed a pair of goals in the opening 15 minutes of play. The Demon Deacons countered the Spartans' aggressiveness and capitalized with the game's first goal at the 18:14 mark. The Deacs' Bobby Gehring scored his first goal of the season off a double assist from Vicente Bastidas and Scott Sealy . Both teams saw plenty more scoring opportunities in the first stanza, but Wake held the 1-0 lead at the intermission.

The Demon Deacons took a 2-0 lead at the 51:31 mark when Justin Moose stripped a UNCG defender and beat another before blasting his third goal of the season into the back right corner of the net.

Goos (Sr./Houston, TX), who currently ranks second in the nation with 3.0 points per game, provided the Spartans with their best scoring opportunity in the second half in the 65th minute when his shot grazed the crossbar above Wake's William Hesmer.

Ryan Alexander's second goal of the season, past a sprawling Jay Benfield in goal, gave Wake a commanding 3-0 lead at the 70:28 mark of the second half. Bobby Gehring was credited with the assist.

With the win, Wake Forest trims the Spartans' all-time lead in the series to 6-5-2. The Wake 3-0 victory ties the largest margin of victory in the series. In 1982, UNCG claimed a 3-0 victory over the Demon Deacons in Winston-Salem.

UNCG will return to the field on Saturday, September 28, at the Carrabba's Soccer Spectacular. The Spartans will take on former Big South rival Liberty at 7 pm.
