GREENSBORO, NC – The UNC Greensboro volleyball team was defeated by East Carolina, 3-1, Friday night in non-conference action in Fleming Gymnasium.
The Spartans (2-14, 0-5 SoCon) matched the Pirates in both intensity and points early in game one. After a short surge that put the Spartans ahead 17-15, ECU (4-10, 0-0 C-USA) rallied to tie the game at 17-17. Senior Dawn Bright's solo block put the Spartans ahead 21-19 and freshman Lori Locascio's kill sealed the game, 30-22. In game two, the Pirates jumped out to a big lead, 22-11, behind strong play at the net by senior Robyn Drewes. ECU took game two, 30-15. The two teams traded points early in game three with the Spartans taking the lead, 3-2, after a kill by freshman Lori Locascio. ECU pushed the lead to 23-17 forcing a UNCG timeout. UNCG regrouped to challenge for the lead at 26-25, but ECU managed to hold onto the lead and take the game, 30-25. Game four proved to be another close contest as the score remained tied as late as 18-18. ECU took the lead at 19-18 and went on to take the game, 30-23, and the match, 3-1.
The Spartans were led by Dawn Bright's 17 kills. Lori Lacascio added 10 kills, six digs, and two blocks. Kim Dayton and Claire Jackson led the defense with 13 and 12 digs, respectively. Juliet Pack recorded 43 assists and four digs.
Pam Ferris led ECU with 17 kills and 14 digs, while Sarah Vick added 16 kills. The Pirates were paced by Jessica Vick's 27 assists and Erica Wilson's 26 assists.
UNCG will return to Southern Conference play Saturday as they host Georgia Southern at 2 pm.
