GREENSBORO, NC - The UNCG women's volleyball team dropped its season opener to Marshall University, 3-0, in its opening match of the Microtel Inn & Suites Invitational. The Herd won 30-18, 30-25 and 30-19.
The Spartans (0-5) were led by Dawn Bright who tallied team highs with 12 kills and 12 digs. UNCG and Marshall were tied, 13-13, but the Herd rattled off six straight points and never looked back to take game one.
UNCG jumped out to an early lead in game two, 12-5, but Marshall managed to climb back into the match. The Herd stole momentum and grabbed a 23-20 lead. The Spartans answered back with a run of its own. UNCG got within a point, 24-23, but could not hold off Marshall in the end. The Herd held on for a hard fought, 30-25, victory.
Marshall cruised past the Spartans in the third and final game. The Herd went up 11-4 and UNCG was not able to get back into the match.
In the first match of the evening, Winthrop University defeated High Point, 3-1. The Eagles (5-0) dominated High Point in game one, 30-14, behind a strong performance by Logan Piece who registered 18 kills for the match.
After falling in the first two games, High Point (0-5) rallied to beat Winthrop, 30-28, using 16 kills to squeak past the Eagles. High Point was led by both Tracyann Price and Kimberly Wright who recorded 11 kills each.
The tournament wraps up tomorrow with Marshall and High Point at 10am. UNCG will play Winthrop at noon. The afternoon matches start with Winthrop and Marshall at 4pm, while UNCG and High Point will close out the invitational at 6pm.
