GREENSBORO, NC - For the second straight match, the UNC Greensboro women's volleyball team suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to a Southern Conference opponent. Today it was East Tennessee State who dealt the Spartans (2-18, 0-5 SoCon) a loss at Fleming Gymnasium. The Buccaneers (3-13, 2-4 SoCon) snapped a four-game losing skid with the 30-27, 30-23, 18-30, 23-30, 15-11 victory.
ETSU dominated play in the first two games and led by as many as six, 26-20 in the first game before holding on for the 30-27 win. In game two, it was more of the same as the Buccaneers used a 24-10 run to extend their lead to 25-15. They held of a late UNCG flurry to go up 2-0 with the 30-23 victory.
UNCG rallied to square the match 2-2 by cruising to 30-18 and 30-23 wins in game's three and four. In the fifth game, UNCG held a slim, 8-6 lead, but ETSU scored nine of the last 12 points to pick up its second SoCon win of the season.
Freshman middle hitter Cindy VanDervoort, a native of Greenville, NC, posted 15 kills for the second straight outing. Fellow middle hitter Lauren Richards, a junior from Hagerstown, MD, added 14 kills against only two attack errors for an impressive .500 hitting percentage and a team-leading seven blocks. Sophomore Hilary Overby posted an identical hitting percentage with 12 kills.
Rebekah Faulise, a senior from Mooresville, NC, who tied Robin Schuller's school record for digs in a five-game match with 33 last time out, came up with 19 to pace the Spartans defensively. Adrian Hicks dished out 31 assists and had 13 digs.
ETSU was led by the trio of Callie Kiselich, Jennifer Sartor and Sara Scandiffio. Kiselich, a freshman middle blocker from Colorado Springs, CO, put away 15 kills, while Sartor and Scandiffio each had 14 kills on the afternoon. Natalie Pittenger had 18 digs to lead the Bucs.
UNCG will host SoCon rival Chattanooga tomorrow at Fleming Gymnasium at 2 pm.
