ROCK HILL, SC – The UNC Greensboro men's soccer team scored four second half goals to come from behind and defeat Winthrop, 5-2, Saturday night at Eagle Field.
With the game tied at two, Randi Patterson scored the game-winner for UNCG in the 57th minute on a pass from Brad McCurry to give the Spartans a 3-2 lead.
James Goodman scored in the 62nd minute to extend UNCG's lead to 4-2 and Mike Richardson added a goal in the 87th minute to set the final score at 5-2.
UNCG improves to 7-4-2 on the season, while Winthrop slips to 8-3-1.
Seven total cards were issued in the game, and the teams combined for 37 fouls.
Goodman's penalty kick in the 58th minute took the wind out of the Eagles' sails and tied the game at two. Donald MacGregor was in goal on the play, taking the place of Andrea Granzotto, who was issued a red card to cause the penalty kick. Patrick O'Callaghan played the final 34 minutes in goal for the Eagles.
UNCG got things going early as James Carlson scored in the second minute to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
Vali Arnason knotted the game at one in the 15th minute, scoring on a pass from Donald MacGregor.
Arnason scored his second goal of the game in the 41st minute to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.
UNCG out-shot Winthrop 21 to nine. The Spartans had a 12 to two second half advantage in shots.
