Volleyball Falls To Appalachian State, 3-0

Boone, NC - The UNC Greensboro volleyball team fell to Appalachian State, 3-0 (30-24, 30-13, 30-20), Friday evening at the Holmes Center. The loss moves the Spartans to 6-11 on the year 2-3 in SoCon play, while Appalachian State improves to 4-11, 2-1 in conference play.

The Spartans put forth a tremendous effort in game one led by the stellar play of senior Kim Dayton who recorded a team-high 12 kills. Appalachian State, however, opened the match with a hot hand, hitting .424 in game one. The Mountaineers took game one, 30-24.

After dropping game two, 30-13, UNCG stepped up their play at the net, holding the Mountaineers to a .156 hitting percentage. Despite the efforts of the Spartans on the defensive end Appalachian State was able to hang on for a 30-20 victory in game three.

Dayton led the Spartans with 12 kills and six digs, while Hilary Overby chipped in with nine kills and five digs. Freshman Abbi Meyer had a solid all-around match with six kills and nine digs.

Senior Katherine Dean led the ASU attack, tallying team highs with 14 kills, a .571 hitting percentage and seven total blocks. Setter Amber Mangrum added 33 assists to five kills of her own, while fellow co-captain Ashley Fails led the squad with 12 digs.

The Spartans will return to action on October 10, as the Spartans host East Tennessee State at 7 pm.
