Greensboro, NC - James Goodman scored a goal and had two assists to lead the UNC Greensboro men's soccer team to an important 3-1 Southern Conference victory over rival Davidson Tuesday night at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. The victory was head coach Michael Parker's 299th at the helm of the Spartans.
"I am very proud of our effort this evening," said Parker. "This was a very sound, excellent team performance tonight. We had a shaky period early in the second half, but we weathered the storm and came out on top of a very good club. This was a huge conference win for us."
UNCG got on the board first when Goodman sent a cross to Egill Atlason who managed to get behind the defender and punched in his second goal of the season at the 25:12 mark of the first half. Davidson managed to tie the score when UNCG goalkeeper Joe Crump was unable to corral Nick Hansell's shot, and Jeff Davis calmly collected the ball and placed it in the bottom right of the net at the 41:21 mark.
Davidson appeared to take control early in the second half, but UNCG managed to stave off any real scoring threats from the Wildcats and remain unscathed. UNCG's Scott Jones snapped the tie at the 72:23 mark when he brought in a pass from Goodman, turned and rocketed in his fourth goal of the season past a flat footed Davidson goalkeeper. Less than two minutes later, Goodman decided to get into the scoring column when he beat his defender left and buried a shot in the bottom right of the net to give the Spartans an insurance goal.
The Spartans improve to 5-2-2 on the season and stay atop the league standings at 3-0-2. With the loss, Davidson slips to 7-3-2 overall and 2-1-0 in league play.
