The Spartans Fall In The Second Round Of The Southern Conference Tournament

Daniel Island, SC - Jeff Files scored a goal at the 103:13 mark of the second overtime to lift the College of Charleston to a 3-2 victory over UNC Greensboro Saturday night in the second round of the 2003 Gift of Life/Southern Conference Men's Soccer Championship played at Blackbaud Stadium.

UNCG struck first in the match when Randi Patterson scored his team-leading 11th goal of the season at the 17:22 mark. Scott Jones was credited with the assist. In the opening minutes of the second half, Egill Atlason extended the Spartans' lead to 2-0 when he scored off an assist from Ben Hunley.

The College of Charleston cut the Spartans' lead in half at the 66:39 mark when Ben Hollingsworth notched the Cougars first goal of the match. Sage Martina had the assist on the goal. The Cougars then tied the match just two minutes later (68:41) when Scott Milroth connected off an assist from Ricardo Diaz Granados.

Neither team could manage a goal in the final 22 minutes of regulation or the first 10 minute overtime, sending the game into its second overtime.

UNCG finishes the 2003 season with an overall record of 10-8-2, marking the 24th straight season where the Spartans' won 10 or more games.

Charleston advances to face Davidson in the conference championship match Sunday. Game time is set for 1 pm at Blackbaud Stadium.
