Spartans fall to top-ranked North Carolina in NCAA second round

CHAPEL HILL, NC - The UNC Greensboro women's soccer team fell to undefeated and top-ranked North Carolina, 5-0, in the second round of the 2003 NCAA Tournament Sunday afternoon at Fetzer Field Field in Chapel Hill, NC.

UNCG was making its third appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Spartans also advanced to the second round in the 1997 and 2000 NCAA Tournaments. The Spartans advanced to this year's second round after knocking off ACC foe Wake Forest, 2-1, on Friday.

North Carolina's Lori Chalupny scored on a one-timer from 12 yards out in the game's third minute in what would prove to be the game-winner. Lindsay Tarpley and Alyssa Ramsey were credited with the double assist. The Tar Heels then added a second insurance goal at the 15:46 mark when Heather O'Reilly scored on another one-timer in the box on an assist from Tarpley. Ramsey then scored a goal of her own in the 24th minute and O'Reilly netted her second of the day in the 52nd minute. Elizabeth Guess scored with just three minutes remaining in regulation to close out the scoring for the Tar Heels.

With the win, North Carolina remains the nation's only undefeated team in Division I at 23-0-0. The Tar Heels opened up the NCAA Tournament with an 8-0 victory over High Point. The Tar Heels will now advance to the sweet sixteen to face the winner of the DePaul-Western Michigan match next weekend.

UNCG finishes the 2003 campaign with an overall record of 15-7-2 and as Southern Conference champions.
