Spartans Upended By Western Carolina In Three

Greensboro, NC - The Western Carolina Catamounts upped their record to 15-14 overall and 7-8 in Southern Conference action with a three-game sweep (30-21, 30-23, 30-24) of the UNC Greensboro volleyball team (7-22, 3-13), Saturday afternoon, in Fleming Gymnasium.

The Spartans came out of the gates quickly, opening up a 4-1 lead following a kill from Lori Brooks. Western Carolina responded with a 3-0 run to knot the score at 4-4 on a kill by Kellyn Thaut. The two teams then traded points with UNCG taking the advantage at 12-11 on a blast from Abbi Meyer. A kill by Michelle Gordon gave the Catamounts the lead once again, 14-13. Trailing, 25-17, the Spartans rallied and reeled off four consecutive points to close the gap to 25-21, but it was not enough as the Catamounts managed to hang on for the game one victory.

After dropping game two, 30-23, the Spartans came through with another gritty effort in game three. The Catamounts opened the match with a 5-1 lead after a kill by Shari Harder. UNCG rallied and closed the gap to 13-11 following back-to-back kills by Lori Collins. A Koontz kill ended the Spartan run and gave the Catamounts a 14-11 advantage en route to the victory.

LaJean Morrow led the Spartans with nine kills and eight digs. Morrow now has 325 kills this season which is the 10th highest season total all-time at UNCG. Lori Collins chipped in with eight kills, while Rebekah Faulise, Stephanie Elbe and Abbi Meyer all recorded double-digit digs.

Thaut paced the Catamount offense with a match-high 18 kills. Sara Komosinski added 12 kills and 10 digs. Shari Harder paced Western Carolina with 46 assists.

UNCG will return to action on November 11, as the Spartans visit Gardner-Webb at 7 pm.
