Josh Gross scored 16 points after missing two games |
GREENSBORO, NC -- James Maye scored 26 points and Josh Gross added 16 off the bench as UNCG held off Wofford, 85-79, in Southern Conference men's basketball action from Fleming Gym Saturday evening.
Mike Lenzly scored a career-high 32 points, including 26 in the second-half, as Wofford (8-10, 4-4 SoCon) rallied in the second-half. UNCG (6-14, 2-6 SoCon) grabbed its largest lead of the game, 63-48, with 10:54 remaining, but Lenzly would not let the Terriers go down quietly. Lenzly scored 11 straight and 16 of the next 22 Wofford points.
The Terriers and Lenzy continued to fight back, climbing within four points, 80-76, with just 1:14 left in regulation, but the Spartans knocked down all four of its free-throw attempts down the stretch to hold on for the win.
Maye finished 10-for-16 from the field, including 3-for-3 from 3-point territory, to pace the Spartans' four double figures scorers. Gross, making his first appearance since a tailbone injury saddled the sophomore the past two games, went 5-for-7 from the floor and knocked down both of his 3-point attempts.
Ray Bristow added 14 points and seven assists, while Ronnie Burrell came off the bench with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Tyler Berg was the only other Terrier in double figures. Berg scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds, including seven on the offensive glass.
The Terriers and Spartans played an entertaining, back and forth, first 20 minutes. The half featured seven leads changes and nine ties. Wofford grabbed its final lead of the half, 20-19, with 8:06 left in the first-half. UNCG regained the lead, 21-20, and pushed the lead to five points, 31-26, but Wofford answered with four unanswered to get within a point, 31-30. Maye keyed the Spartans' 11-3 run over the final two minutes of the half. The senior scored eight of his first-half 10 points in the stretch.
In addition to Maye, Gross and Burrell helped the Spartans to a nine-point lead at the half, 42-33. Gross went 4-for-5 from the floor in the opening half and scored 10 points, while Burrell added nine points and six rebounds.
The Spartans return to action Monday evening at College of Charleston. Tip-off at Kresse Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m.
