Joe Crump registered five saves in the Spartan victory

CHAPEL HILL, NC – Freshman Scott Jones scored two goals and added an assist as UNC Greensboro defeated #11 Virginia Commonwealth 3-1 in the first round of the Nike Carolina Cup.

Following a scoreless first half, the Spartans (3-1) tallied two goals in a five-minute span to give
UNCG a 2-0 lead. Jones scored his first goal of the season at the 64:35 mark on a breakaway, assisted by sophomore Egill Atlason. Freshman Randi Patterson found the back of the net for the Spartans five minutes later for a 2-0 advantage. Jones and Atlason assisted on the goal, the third of the season for Patterson. Jones netted his second goal on a steal and breakaway at 84:06.

The Rams (3-2) avoided the shutout as senior Cristian Neagu scored at the 88:31 mark on an assist by freshman Hugh McDonald.

Senior Joe Crump registered five saves for the Spartans. Junior Saul Montero had one save for VCU.

The Spartans will meet Michigan on Sunday, September 14 at noon, and the Rams will square off against North Carolina at 2:30 pm.
