Greensboro, NC - The UNC Greensboro men's soccer team registered two first half goals and held off the College of Charleston for a 2-1 victory Saturday night at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. With the win, UNCG improves to 4-2-1 on the season and 2-0-1 in Southern Conference play. Charleston slips to 4-3-1 overall and 0-2-0 in league play.

Despite not getting on the board in the first half, Charleston had its share of scoring opportunities. UNCG's senior goalkeeper Joe Crump (Greensboro, NC) registered four saves in the half and consistently kept the Cougars from scoring.

UNCG however was the first team to get on the board. Egill Atlason (Fr./Hafnarfjordur, Iceland) got off a shot that was deflected in by a Charleston defenseman. The Spartans took a 1-0 lead at the 16:26 mark on an own goal. With the first half winding down, Scott Jones (Fr./Dallas, TX) raced down the center of the field before losing possession. Fellow freshman Randi Patterson (Hackensack, NJ) collected it and drill it in the lower left portion of the goal past a sprawling Keith Wiggans to give UNCG a commanding 2-0 lead at the 40:44 mark.

As the wind picked up and rain began to fall, both teams had scoring opportunities in the second half, but solid goalkeeping by both teams kept the score at 2-0. Finally, at the 82:24 mark, the Cougars' Troy Lesesne scored on a header to cut the Spartans' lead to 2-1.

Charleston out shot UNCG in the match, 10-6, but Crump's five assists in goal made the difference in the match.

UNCG returns to the pitch Saturday, September 4, at home against conference rival Furman. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 pm at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. The College of Charleston will next host William & Mary, Saturday, September 4.
