UNCG-Wofford Box Score

Greensboro, NC - The UNC Greensboro volleyball team picked up their second Southern Conference victory of the 2003 season with a 3-0 sweep of Wofford, Sunday afternoon, in Fleming Gymnasium.

In game one, UNCG (5-9, 2-1 SoCon) fell behind and trailed the Terriers, 4-1. A kill by LaJean Morrow broke the Wofford (4-10, 0-3 SoCon) run and a kill soon after from Abbi Meyer knotted the score at 4-4. The Spartans then took the lead at 5-4 before going on a 15-4 run to increase their lead to 20-8, en route to the 30-17 game one win.

UNCG opened game two much stronger, matching the Terriers point for point. With the two teams tied at 9-9, the Spartans were able to pull away with a slim 12-9 advantage following an assisted block from Morrow and Lauren Richards. A kill by Hilary Overby extended the Spartan lead to six, 20-14, but Wofford responded to pull within four, 24-20, after an ace by Megan Propst. The Terrier run would be short-lived, however, as the Spartans rallied behind the play of seniors Morrow and Kim Dayton to take the game 30-21.

In game three, UNCG reeled off nine straight points before Wofford was able to register a point on the scoreboard. Dayton highlighted the run with two kills and an assisted block. The Terriers managed to end the run with a kill from setter Rhea de Jesus. After the kill from de Jesus, UNCG went back on the attack with an 11-4 run capped of by a Dayton kill. Wofford put together a late rally to close the gap to 29-15, but a kill from Richards ended the game, 30-15, and the match, 3-0.

"We have talked all season about how volleyball is a mental game," said head coach Stacy Meadows-Kosciak. "We didn't perform well or execute well against Furman on Saturday, so we talked about the need for this team to put together back-to-back consistent performances against Southern Conference competition. We did a much better job passing the ball today, allowing our setter to run the offense. Adrian (Hicks) was able to connect with our middle hitters very well and the seniors did an excellent job of wanting the ball, which gave her plenty of options."

Abbi Meyer and LaJean Morrow each tallied 11 kills to lead the Spartan offense. Kim Dayton chipped in with 10 kills and 11 digs, while Adrian Hicks paced the Spartan attack with 43 assists.

Katie Sobczyk registered six kills to lead the Terriers offensively, while Lindsay Lyman spearheaded the defensive effort with 13 digs.

UNCG will return to action on Tuesday at 7pm when the Spartans host Campbell.
