Elon, NC – Mike Richardson (Fr./Dobson, NC) and Randi Patterson (Fr./Hackensack, NJ) each scored a goal to pace UNC Greensboro to a 2-0 victory over Elon in Southern Conference men's soccer action Sunday afternoon at Rudd Field. The game marked the first ever for Elon men's soccer team as a member of the Southern Conference.

Richardson scored his second goal of the season at the 23:38 mark of the first half off an assist from Scott Jones (Fr./Dallas, TX). Patterson then determined the final score of the game when he found the back of the net at the 67:37 mark via assists from Brad McCurry (Jr./Gastonia, NC) and Adrian Worthen (Jr./Morehead City, NC).

The win improves the Spartans to 2-1 on the season and 1-0 in SoCon play. Elon slips to 1-2 on the 2003 campaign and 0-1 in league play.

The Spartans out shot Elon by an 18-6 margin, including an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal. UNCG goalie Jay Benfield (So./Lewisville, NC) snagged three saves while Elon's keeper, Kyle Ostendorf, logged six.

Patterson attempted a game-high five shots for the Spartans. Tim Sullivan led the Phoenix with three shots, including two on goal.

UNCG moves on to face Virginia Commonwealth in the UNC Classic, Friday, September 12. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 pm in Chapel Hill. Elon will host UNC Asheville at 4 pm, Wednesday, September 10, at Rudd Field.
