GREENSBORO, NC – Deven Beachum scored her seventh goal of the season with 4:53 to play to lift UNC Greensboro to a 2-1 victory over Western Carolina in Southern Conference women's soccer action at UNCG Soccer Stadium on Friday evening.
The win was UNCG's 13th straight at home against SoCon opponents and 15th in the last 16 games against conference foes. UNCG last lost to a SoCon opponent at home on October 27 2002, when it lost to Furman, 5-2. During the streak UNCG has defeated every Southern Conference school at UNCG Soccer Stadium at least once with the exception of Chattanooga, which the Spartans face on Sunday.
It was also UNCG's fourth consecutive win and pulled them into a tie for first place with idle Davidson. Each has 15 points with a 5-1-0 record on the season. Furman entered its game with Elon on Friday night three points behind Davidson and UNCG, as did Chattanooga entering its game Friday night with Georgia Southern. UNCG hosts Chattanooga on Sunday at 1 p.m. in a key Southern Conference clash, looking to avenge a 1-0 loss at Chattanooga last year.
Beachum, a redshirt sophomore from Raleigh, NC, broke the 1-1 tie when she knocked home a Nicolette DeLaine pass for her seventh goal of the season, which tied her with Amy Carnell for the team lead. Beachum now has a goal in three straight games and a point in each of the last four.
DeLaine, a junior from Raleigh, NC, also assisted on UNCG's first goal of the night. Just 23 into the first half, Rakel Logadottir scored her second goal of the season with a blast from 14 yards out in the middle of the box. DeLaine and Jessica Patterson assisted on that tally. DeLaine, who recorded her first multiple-point game as a Spartan on Friday night, has three assists in the last two games.
It looked for a while like that 1-0 lead would stand up as UNCG (9-4-0, 5-1-0 SoCon) dominated play. The Spartans held Western Carolina without a shot for the first 65:25 of the game. UNCG outshot Western Carolina, 19-4, for the game.
However, the Catamounts (3-8-3, 1-4-3 SoCon) knotted the score at the 77:01 mark when Brittany Bennefield banged home a loose ball in the box after UNCG defender Jessie Jay knocked away an initial shot coming out of a crowd in front of the goal. It was Benefield's second goal of the season.
But Beachum's late tally broke the tie and gave the Spartans a share of first place in the SoCon and kept their winning streaks intact.
