UNC Greensboro women's volleyball drops 3-2 match at Campbell

BUIES CREEK, NC The UNC Greensboro women's volleyball team suffered a 3-2 setback to Campbell in a non-league match tonight in Buies Creek, NC. The win improves the Camels record to 9-12, while the Spartans drop to 2-22.

 

Cindy VanDervoort led the Spartans once again with 22 kills to pace four players with double-digit kill totals. Lauren Richards added 14 kills, while Lauren Keiser and Lori Collins put away 13 and 11 kills respectively.

 

Adrian Hicks dished out 58 assists and came up with a team-high 17 digs. Rebekah Faulise, the Southern Conferences leader in digs, had 16.

 

Tabitha Turner led Campbell with a match-high 27 kills, while Rachel Templin had 19 of her own. Alissa Brackeen came up with a team-best 19 digs.

 

In the opening frame, Campbell jumped out to an 11-5 lead before a UNC Greensboro timeout.  Following the break the Camels continued their streak and took game one 30-17, and would hold on for the 30-27 win in game two.

 

In game three, Campbell and UNCG battled to 22 ties and nine lead changes. Tied at 28-28, Turner put the Camels ahead 29-28. Facing the game's first match point, the Spartans evened the score 29-29 on a Keiser kill.  UNCG avoided four consecutive CU match points to find themselves tied once again at 34-34. The Spartans broke the tie and capitalized on their first game point on consecutive CU miscues to take the middle game 36-34 and extend the contest. VanDervoort led the Spartans with seven kills in game three.


In game four, UNCG raced out to a 16-9 advantage and never surrendered the lead forcing a fifth and decisive game with a 30-27 victory. VanDervoort added seven more kills in the fourth frame.


In the match's final game, CU opened with a 6-0 lead before the Spartans answered with a 7-3 run of their own to make it 9-7 in favor of Campbell.  The Spartans were unable to inch closer as the Fighting Camels finished with a 5-3 streak to win the final game 15-10.

 

UNCG gets back to SoCon action on Saturday, October 23 when the Spartans visit The Citadel for a 7 pm match in Charleston, SC. The Fighting Camels host Atlantic Sun rival Troy State on Saturday at 6 pm.
