GREENVILLE, SC - Junior midfielder Phil Long had a hand in both goals, including scoring the game-winner with just over seven minutes to play, as No. 2 UNC Greensboro stayed unbeaten with a 2-1 win over Furman in Southern Conference men's soccer action Saturday night.
Long scored an unassisted goal at 82:51 to break a 1-1 tie and keep the Spartans unbeaten on the 2004 season. UNCG is now 8-0-1 overall and 2-0-1 in Southern Conference play.
Richard Jata gave Furman (3-4-1, 0-1-0) a 1-0 lead 1:18 into the second half with his third goal of the season.
Randi Patterson, a sophomore from Teaneck, NJ, scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season to tie the game nearly two minutes later. Patterson gathered a rebound off of a free kick by Long and put it off the post and into the net at 48:17.
Long, a native of Wilson, NC then scored unassisted at 82:51 to break the deadlock.
The win was UNCG's first in Greenville since 1990. UNCG last won at Furman before the Spartans were a Division I member. UNCG had not beaten Furman in the last eight meetings between the schools, going 0-7-1 during that span.
Jay Benfield returned to net after leaving Wednesday's win over North Carolina with an injury. Benfield recorded three saves in picking up the win for UNCG.
The Spartans outshot Furman, 17-8, for the game.
UNCG will hit the road again Tuesday night, the second of a three-game road trip. The Spartans will face Georgia Southern on Tuedsay at 7 p.m.
