GREENSBORO, NC – Rakel Logadottir scored two goals and Nicollette DeLaine recorded a Southern Conference Tournament record four assists to lead top-seeded UNC Greensboro to a 7-0 win over eighth-seeded Western Carolina in the first round of the 2004 SoCon Women's Soccer Championships at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
The Spartans improved to 14-4-1, while the Catamounts finished their season 5-10-3.
UNCG advanced to face fifth-seeded Davidson tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. In the regular season, the Spartans downed the Wildcats, 2-0, on October 28 at UNCG Soccer Stadium. UNCG has now advanced to the semifinals of the SoCon Tournament five straight and seven of the eight years since joining the league in 1997.
Jaime Ableman scored in the opening minute of play to give UNCG a quick 1-0 lead. She tapped in a cross from Nicolette DeLaine for her third goal of the year. Logadottir made it 2-0 when she scored unassisted off a corner kick at 16:24 to close out the first half scoring.
Logadottir added her fourth goal in the last two games just three minutes into the second period when she knocked home a shot from 15-yards out off a feed from DeLaine to make it 3-0. Prior to the last two outings, the senior from Iceland had only two tallies in the first 17 games of the year.
DeLaine setup goals for Deven Beachum and Cara Hammond just 30 seconds apart to up UNCG's lead to 5-0 and in the process became just the fourth player at UNCG to dish out four assists in a single game. Dacia Beachum and Emilie Stewart added goals later in the half off assists by Carolyn Lindsay to cap the evening's festivities.
UNCG goalkeeper Jennifer Stillman had four saves to post the Spartans' fourth straight shutout in SoCon Tournament play. Western Carolina goalkeeper Alesha Row picked up eight saves in the setback.
