GREENSBORO, N.C. – Egill Atlason and Randi Patterson had a goal and an assist each as the top-seeded UNC Greensboro men's soccer team defeated eighth-seeded Wofford, 4-0, in the first round of the 2004 Southern Conference Championship at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
The Spartans improved to 18-1-1 overall, while Wofford finished their season at 3-16-1.
UNCG advanced to face fourth-seeded Davidson on Friday at 4:30 at Blackbaud Stadium in Daniel Island, S.C. Davidson defeated fifth-seeded Georgia Southern, 4-3, Tuesday night in Davidson. In the regular season, the Spartans defeated the Wildcats, 2-1, on October 12 at Alumni Stadium.
Atlason put the Spartans on the board early at the 2:56 mark to give UNCG a 1-0 lead. Atlason scored from 16 yards out off a pass from Scott Jones. Matt Smith made it 2-0 at the 7:24 mark when he scored his eighth goal of the season when he knocked home a shot from ten yards out off a feed from Patterson. Phil Long closed out the scoring in the first half with his seventh goal of the season off a penalty kick at 36:56.
Patterson closed out the scoring at the 51:53 mark when he tapped in a cross from Atlason from six yards.
“It was a solid performance for us tonight,” said UNCG head coach Michael Parker. “We did what we had to do on both sides of the field. Now it's time for us to move on and prepare for Davidson on Friday.”
UNCG freshman netminder Ryan Nowak recorded two saves in posting his second career shutout. Wofford goalkeepers Russ Sandifer and Joey Taylor combined to stop three UNCG shots.
