Ronnie Burrell Scores A Career-High 29 Points In Loss To Appalachian State

GREENSBORO, NC - Chris McFarland led four Mountaineers in double-figures with 20 points as Appalachian State defeated UNC Greensboro, 82-60, Tuesday night in Fleming Gymnasium.

With the win, Appalachian State improves to 9-17 on the season and 4-9 in Southern Conference action. UNCG slips to 8-15 overall and 5-8 in league play.

UNCG got off to a slow start offensively, hitting its first field goal at the 10:25 mark of the first half when Ronnie Burrell hit a jumper in the paint. Appalachian State took a 30-17 lead late in the first half, but the Spartans went on a 10-2 run to cut the lead to 32-27. Ricky Hickman gave the Spartans the momentum going into the half as he hit a jumper from just inside the 3-point line to set the score at 34-29 at the intermission.

Appalachian State opened the second half on an 5-0 run to once again move their lead into double-digits, 39-29. The Spartans once again battled back and closed the Mountaineers' lead to six, 44-38. The Mountaineers responded with a critical 14-2 run to extend their lead to 58-40 and put the game out of reach.

Ronnie Burrell scored a career-high 29 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, his fifth double-double of the season. Burrell went 7-of-11 from the field, but went 15-of-19 from the free throw line. His 15 made free throws is a new UNCG single-game record, as is his 19 free throw attempts. As a team, UNCG had just eight assists and committed 22 turnovers.

In addition to McFarland's 20 points, Noah Brown added 15 for the Mountaineers. Corwin Davis chipped in 13 and Derek Thomas scored 12. The Mountaineers shot 50.8% (33-of-65) from the field, and recorded 15 steals.

UNCG will return to action again on Saturday, February 21, at Georgia Southern. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 pm at Hanner Field House. Appalachian State returns home to host Chattanooga on Saturday, February 21, at 3:30 pm.
