GREENSBORO, NC – The UNC Greensboro men's soccer team opened up the 2004 season with a 2-1 win over #21-ranked Virginia Tech, Wednesday evening at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
Virginia Tech (0-1) got its only goal of the evening at the 1:10 mark on an own goal scored when Ben Nason's cross deflected off a UNCG defender into the goal.
UNCG (1-0) answered at the 4:09 mark when sophomore Randi Patterson recovered a loose ball from ten yards out and scored. Patterson's goal was assisted by Jeff Lochrie.
Patterson notched his second goal late in the second half at the 72:36 mark, when he headed in a cross from junior Egill Atlason. Patterson, a second team All-SoCon performer in 2003, recorded his first multiple goal scoring game in his career.
UNCG netminder Jay Benfield stopped four Virginia Tech shots on the night, while Hokie goalkeeper Chase Harrison recorded ten saves.
"It was a good win over quality competition," said head coach Michael Parker. " I thought we played well in pieces in the first half. The second half I thought we were more consistent. Overall, it was a very close game, but we played well enough to win."
The Spartans return to action, Saturday, September 4 at 7 pm against Clemson at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
