ROCK HILL, SC— The UNCG volleyball team (1-5) dropped a pair of matches Saturday in the final day of action at the 2004 Hilton Garden Invitational hosted by Winthrop University. The Spartans fell in their opening match of the day to East Carolina 3-0, before losing to the host Winthrop Eagles, 3-0 in the night cap.

East Carolina (5-3) got ten kills from Kelley Wernert as the Pirates took the match with scores of 30-19, 30-24, 30-13. Heidi Krug had 35 assists in the match while Johanna Bertini tallied 22 digs. Freshman Lauren Keiser paced the Spartan attack with nine kills, along with eight digs. Junior Adrian Hicks recorded 17 assists, while senior Rebekah Faulise had 11 digs.

In the final match of the tournament, Winthrop took a 30-14, 30-13, 30-24 win over UNC Greensboro. Junior Lauren Richards along with freshman Alysia Rosvold had six kills each. Winthrop (8-1) had two players with double-figure in kills. Taryn Surbaugh had 16, while Mary Hock registered 14.   

UNCG returns to the court for the Clarion Hotel Westgate Rocket Classic, hosted by the University of Toledo, Sept. 17-18. The Spartans will open up against Dayton at 12:30 p.m.
