DAVIDSON, NC – Randi Patterson scored 2:56 into sudden-death overtime and James Goodman had two goals and assist as seventh-ranked UNC Greensboro survived a scare and defeated Vanderbilt, 5-4, in men's soccer action at the Davidson Invitational on Sunday afternoon.
Patterson, a sophomore from Hackensack, NJ, scored his sixth goal of the season off a feed from Goodman to lift the Spartans (4-0) to the win.
UNCG forced overtime when sophomore Pat Farrell scored from the top of the box off a feed by Patterson with just 36 seconds remaining in regulation time.
After a pair of goals by Goodman, including the second on a penalty kick, gave UNCG a 2-1 lead midway through the first half, the Commodores' Jerry Tirenkyi scored at 37:59 and 46:31 to give Vanderbilt (1-3) a 3-2 lead.
Farrell, a Greensboro, NC native, tied the game, 3-3, at 72:45 when he scored his first goal of the season off a direct kick with an assist by Jeff Lochrie. However, Vandy took a 4-3 lead at 79:08 on a header by John Krause.
Farrell, however, tied the game with his second goal of the day at 89:24. Patterson then followed with a header from the middle of the box, the only shot recorded by either team in the extra-session, to give the Spartans the win.
Jay Benfield earned the win in net for UNC Greensboro. He came in relief of Ryan Nowak at the start of overtime, but did not face a shot. Nowak made two saves for UNCG.
UNCG will return home to face backyard-rival Elon on Saturday night at 7 p.m. in the SoCon opener for both teams.
