GREENSBORO, NC – The third-ranked UNC Greensboro men's soccer played to a very tough 1-1 stalemate with conference rival Elon Saturday night at the UNCG Soccer Stadium in front of 759 fans. The match was the conference opener for both schools.
With the tie, UNCG moves to 4-0-1, 0-0-1 in Southern Conference play. Elon is now 1-2-3 overall, 0-0-1 in league play.
The first 45 minutes were scoreless with the Spartans owning a 5-2 shot advantage.
Elon broke the scoreless tie early in the second half, when forward Douglas Boateng scored after he recovered a loose ball and fired a shot from 15 yards out. Boateng's goal, his third on the season came at 47:08.
UNCG scored the equalizer at 77:50 when sophomore midfielder Mike Richardson scored when his shot from 12 yards out defelected off an Elon defender and rolled into the goal. Richardson's goal was his first of the season.
The Spartans outshot Phoenix, 13-5 on the night, including 12-3 in regulation.
UNCG goalkeeper Jay Benfield recorded three saves on the evening, while Elon keeper Taylor Saxe stopped five shots.
UNCG returns to action this Tuesday evening against No. 2 Wake Forest at Spry Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Elon travels to Boone to take on Appalachian State, Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
