Men's Soccer Routs Appalachian State, 5-0

GREENSBORO, NC – UNCG scored four first half goals and never looked back as the No. 4 UNCG men's soccer team downed Appalachian State, 5-0, in Southern Conference action Saturday evening at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. UNCG improves to 6-0-1 overall, 1-0-1 in the Southern Conference, while Appalachian State drops to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in league play.

"Our plan in the locker room before the game was to come out with intensity", said UNCG head coach Michael Parker. "We took care of business early and all is happy."

Sophomore Randi Patterson scored twice and recorded an assist, while Phil Long added two goals to pace the Spartan attack.

Long, the product of Wilson, NC, scored both of his goals in the first half, the first coming at 9:13 when he took a feed from Scott Jones and scored. His second came at 26:28 when he converted a penalty kick after being taken down in the box by an Appalachian State defender. Patterson scored his first goal at 18:31 when he tapped in a shot from five yards out. Patterson scored his second at 60:18 when took a header from Egill Atlason and scored. Patterson added an assist on UNCG's third goal of the evening at 20:43 when he fed a streaking Pat Farrell in front of the goal.

The goaltending duo of Jay Benfield and Ryan Nowak combined for the shutout. Appalachian State goalkeeper Phillip Cavicchia stopped six shots.

UNCG outshot Appalachian State, 20-4 on the game including 16-2 in the first half.

UNC Greensboro returns to action Wednesday against North Carolina. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
