Box Score
Kyle Hines has 38 points, 33 rebounds and 11 blocks in his last two games |
ELON, NC – Kyle Hines tied a school-record with 19 rebounds to go along with 14 points and six blocked shots, but it wasn't enough to thwart Elon's upset bid in defeating UNC Greensboro, 54-50, in Southern Conference men's basketball action Monday night.
The win snapped a 14-game losing streak for the Phoenix (3-19, 1-8). Elon, whose last win came against Division III Greensboro College, had not beaten a Division I opponent since the opening game of the season back on November 17.
With the loss, UNC Greensboro (13-7, 6-3) missed on a chance to take sole possession of first place in the Southern Conference's North Division, as Chattanooga lost at Davidson on Monday night. The Spartans also lost for the eighth time in nine visits to Alumni Gymnasium.
The game was tight throughout, as neither team held more than a four-point advantage until the final seconds. Despite recording just one field goal in the final six minutes of the first half, Elon held a 26-25 lead at the intermission.
The Spartans opened the second half with a 10-5 run, capped by Josh Gross' dunk, to take its biggest lead of the night, 35-31. But the Phoenix scored eight of the next 10 points to regain a 39-37 advantage with just under nine minutes to play.
After Ronnie Burrell's lay-up tied the score, 39-39, Ryan Jones hit one of two free throws to give Elon the lead for good, 40-39. The Spartans had several chances to tie or take the lead in the final five minutes, but Elon stretched the lead to five, 48-43, with 1:08 to play when Brian Waters made 1-of-2 at the line.
UNCG got back to within a bucket, 50-48, with 27 seconds left when Ricky Hickman banked a three-pointer in from the top of the key. Hickman finished with 11 points and nine rebounds.
However, Elon's Chris Chalko knocked down a pair of foul shots four seconds later and UNCG failed to convert on its next possession and was again forced to foul. Elon's Ryan Jones missed both free throws this time and Hickman drove the lane and cut the lead to two again with a lay-up, 52-50, with nine seconds left. After a UNCG timeout, the Spartans fouled again. This time, however, Scottie Rice knocked down both free throws to clinch the win.
Hines, a freshman from Sicklerville, NJ who had 24 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks in Saturday's win over Chattanooga, tied the UNCG record set by Eric Cuthrell on December 7, 1994 against Appalachian State. Hines, who broke Cuthrell's single-season blocked shot record on Saturday night, now has 172 rebounds this season, most ever by a UNCG freshman. He also raised his UNCG single-season record total for blocks to 79 this season.
UNCG held Elon to just 27.9 percent shooting from the field, but committed 18 turnovers to Elon's nine. The Phoenix held a 16-2 advantage in points of turnovers.
Monday's loss snapped UNCG's 15-game winning streak when holding the opposition to under 70 points. The Spartans had not lost since December 6, 2003 when holding the opposition under 70 points.
The Spartans will face Davidson, the team sitting atop the SoCon's South Division, on Saturday night at Fleming Gymnasium, where the Spartans have won a school-record 11 in a row. Game time is set for 7 pm.
