GREENSBORO, NC Posting its sixth shutout of the season, the UNC Greensboro women's soccer team bested Elon 3-0 Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. With the win, the Spartans improved to 7-4-0, 3-1-0 in the league while the Phoenix fell to 2-7-2, 0-3-0 in conference play. The win also marked the eighth consecutive game UNCG has beaten Elon, and the fourth straight time the Spartans have blanked Elon in Greensboro.
The Spartans opened the scoring in the 28th minute when Deven Beachum scored her second goal of the season off a feed from senior Nicollette DeLaine to give UNCG a 1-0 lead. DeLaine sent a service into the Phoenix box where Elon keeper Liz Johnson was unable to make the save, leaving the ball stranded in front on the goal where Beachum fired it into the back of the Phoenix net. Senior Amy Carnell also picked up her fourth assist on the play.
Junior Meredith Paisley extended the UNCG lead to 2-0 in the 38th minute as she scored her first goal of the season. The Greensboro, NC native fired a shot from over 30 yards out on the left side of the field that beat the diving Johnson to the right side of the goal. The Spartans outshot Elon 11-2 in the first period and 21-6 for the game.
UNCG added a third goal in the 62nd minute when freshman Carolin Feierabend netted her first goal of the season on DeLaine's second assist of the contest. As DeLaine dribbled down the right side of the field, she sent a cross just outside the Elon box where Feierabend fired a one touch blast, beating Johnson with a goal into the right corner of the net. The assist was DeLaine's conference and team-leading seventh of the season. Shannon Donovan also picked up an assist on the play as she started the scoring play with a service to DeLaine.
“It was good to get a conference win and I was pleased with our effort today against a hard working, very organized Elon team,” head coach Eddie Radwanski said. “I liked our two games this past week, and now we'll look to get ready for next week's game.”
The Spartans return to the field next Friday evening at 7 pm when UNCG travels to Wofford to take on the Terriers. Elon remains on the road for their next contest, facing the College of Charleston Thursday at 6 pm.
