CHATTANOOGA, TN The UNC Greensboro women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision at Chattanooga Friday afternoon at UTC's North River Soccer Complex. With the loss, the Spartans dropped to 7-5-0 on the year, 3-2-0 in the league.
Chattanooga cracked the scoreboard early and grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the seventh minute of the game, scoring on a header off a corner kick. Lady Moc Jennifer Duggan sent a service into the Spartan box where Maya Peel connected on an 18-yard header for her third goal of the season to beat Spartan keeper Jennifer Stillman.
Following Chattanooga's early score, UNCG's league-leading defense remained true to form as the Spartans contained and controlled the Lady Moc offense, limiting UTC to only three shots for the remainder of the half. The Spartans, however, managed but two shots and trailed by one after the first stanza.
After an offensive struggle in the first half, both teams came out firing in session two as the teams combined for 25 second half shots. Chattanooga fired 14 shots while the Spartans launched 11. Despite the abundance of scoring chances in the second half, neither was able to capitalize on a scoring opportunity. UNCG nearly netted the equalizer with less than eight minutes to play on a shot from reigning SoCon Player of the Year Amy Carnell. Carnell received a pass two yards outside the Lady Moc box, but her shot was smothered by UTC keeper Stacey Matthiessen to preserve the 1-0 win.
UNCG returns to the soccer field Sunday afternoon at 2 pm when the Spartans host Georgia Southern at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. Meanwhile, Chattanooga takes to the road Sunday for a 2 pm contest at Elon.
