CONWAY, SC An own goal in the first five minutes of the contest held up as Jay Benfield recorded his sixth shutout of the season in UNC Greensboro's 1-0 win over Coastal Carolina in non-conference men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans (
9-3-0) won their fourth straight and seventh in their last eight matches. Coastal Carolina dropped to 4-8-1 with the loss.
Randi Patterson took a shot that deflected off of a Coastal Carolina defender and went into the net to give UNCG a 1-0 lead just 4:42 into the game.
That would be all of the scoring on the day as UNCG's Benfield lowered his goals against average to 0.82 with Saturday's effort. He also has an .846 save percentage after recording five saves against Coastal Carolina. Because of yesterday's declaring of the Davidson match as a no contest, Benfield has recorded three straight shutouts and has not allowed a goal in the month of October. He is working on a scoreless streak that is two seconds shy of 350 minutes.
UNCG takes the road again on Wednesday when it faces backyard-rival High Point in another non-conference match-up at 7 pm.
