UNCG and Davidson battle to a 2-2 draw in women's soccer action

DAVIDSON, NC UNC Greensboro scored the first two goals of the game, but Davidson rallied for the final two scores as the Spartans and Wildcats battled to a 2-2 draw. 

 

Sunday's contest was the fifth overtime game of the season for the Spartans and the only one to end in a tie.  UNCG is now 2-2-1 in overtime games played this season.

 

The Spartans (8-5-1, 4-2-1 SoCon) took a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute as a pair of team leaders hooked up for the game's first score.  Senior Cara Hammond connected for her sixth goal of the season on a one touch shot off a feed from fellow senior Nicollette DeLaine.  For DeLaine, it was also her league-leading eighth helper of the season. 

 

Karla Davis extended UNCG's lead to 2-0 early in the second half when she netted her second goal of the season on an unassisted shot from 15 yards out.  The reigning SoCon Freshman of the Year is now one of seven Spartans who have scored multiple goals this season.

 

Senior Kara Koehrn scored Davidson's (11-4-2, 7-0-1) first goal of the afternoon in the 74th minute as she connected on a header from nine yards out off a Wildcat corner kick.  Koehrn later tied the game in the 84th minute when she notched her league-leading 16th goal of the season on a shot from 22 yards out, ultimately sending the contest into overtime.

 

In the first overtime session, both teams fired a pair of unsuccessful shots, leaving the game deadlocked at two after the first set of extra time.  Only three shots were taken in the second overtime period as neither team could find the golden goal.  For the contest, Davidson held a 14-13 shot advantage as well as s 7-5 edge in corner kicks.

 

In goal, Jennifer Stillman recorded four saves while Davidson keeper Bevin English collected five.

 

UNCG returns to action Tuesday evening when the Spartans travel to Wofford to take on the Terriers in a 7 pm contest.  The match with Wofford was originally scheduled for Oct. 7, but was postponed until Oct. 25 due to severe weather in and around the Spartanburg, SC area.
